500 Popular Roses for American Gardeners
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1999)
Author: Barron's
Average review score:

Unless you want Austins or Romanticas, this will cover it
In a sense, this book is out of date because it does not cover the really new roses and rose types. That said, it is probably otherwise one of the most detailed and comprehensive sources I've seen -- and I've looked at a lot of them. I bought it used and if you don't want to spring for Botanica, or whatever the next 'bible' turns out to be, this will probably meet most of your needs.

Stop and Smell the Pages
I bought this book as a present for my mother who loves to grow roses (she has a mere 91 plants) and she loved it. She immediately began tagging the roses she grows with those little pop up flags from Post-It. I don't grow roses, but found the information in this book interesting and helpful (Mom new a lot of it, but found it helpful none-the-less). The pictures can't be beat - they show each rose in all it's glory. The pictures are great. It is a paper back edition, but comes with a clear plastic dust jacket that is helpful for keeping the cover looking new. Honestly even if you just use it for the pictures you can't go wrong. It's a great book for anyone who loves and grows roses.

A "must-have" for any rose lover.
This is probably the best, most up to date, little handbook on roses available. The pictures are true to live to what you will see in your own garden. Not the enhanced versions you see in some books. Although the descriptions are brief, they give an adequate description of each rose. It covers old garden roses as well as the current David Austin roses. With as many pictures and descriptions this book has, it is a great resource of information. I carry this one around with me to nurseries. It even comes with its own plastic cover to protect it. You won't go wrong this book.

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (Bloom's Notes)
Published in Paperback by Chelsea House Publishing (December, 1999)
Authors: Harold Bloom and Aldous Huxley
Average review score:

¿Community, Identity and Stability'
Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' takes place in Europe, in 625 after Ford (people started a new era in 1908, the year in which the American industrialist Henry Ford produced his first Model-T car). There is a New World society. People are no longer born the natural way, but the state creates and conditions them. Humans are being mass produced and preconditioned to become members of one of the social classes, ranging from Alpha plus to Epsilon minus. People are going to work and get their soma. They get their education at their level and they get sleep teaching. It's a totally arranged life.

Aldous Huxley was born at Godalming in 1894, into a prominent family of scientists. The nearly blind man was educated at Eton and Oxford and writer of many novels, short stories, essays, drama and verse, but 'Brave New World' has proved to be his most lastingly popular work. The title was taken from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', in which Miranda, when seeing the first glimpse of the world outside the island on which she grew up, speaks the words: "O brave new world that has such people in it."

In this novel-of-ideas and dystopia, or in other words, a savage criticism of the scientific future, the motto is Community, Identity and Stability. There is no love, no individualism and people do not have emotions. Everybody belongs to one big group. No one is alone, because everybody is the same. The motto is, off course, an ironic contrast with the battlecry of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. It's obvious that Huxley wants to point out the dangerous aspects of the advancement of science. People will abuse the results of investigations, which will make the individual disappear.

The link of the motto with the battlecry of the French Revolution is not the only one. Many of the character's names are composed by use of the names of historical heroes. For example Benito Hoover, is made of Benito Mussolini and Herbert Hoover. This way the writer is parodying all the time.

The story starts at the London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where the Director explains some students how humans are being made by the Bokanovski-process. Eggs divide again and again (sometimes even 96 humans are beings hatch from one egg). When the Director asks a student whether he knows what a parent is, he answers: '"Human beings used to be." he hesitated; the blood rushed to his cheeks. "Well, they used to be viviparous."'

Bernard Marx is different from others. Something went wrong when he was in his bottle. He turned out to be, although he is, too small for an Alpha. He doesn't look like and has more emotions than other Alphas, which makes him not belonging to the big group. He and his colleague Lenina, a very pretty girl, who is very popular among the Alphas, go to New Mexico, to the Savages. Here the people haven't been scientifically produced. They meet John and his mother and take them to their world, which John really likes. He would love to see the New World. John hasn't been manipulated, so he's still able to have strong feelings....

A real pessimist can only think of a world like this. Therefore I think it's amazing how Huxley made up this story. It's been a great pleasure reading it, and it makes you start thinking about what the world will be in the future. Next to that, there's another, an educational aspect in the book. People have to be aware of abusers of knowledge. Huxley sure makes clear what he wants to say. It's a perfect novel.

Everyone should be required to read Brave New World!
Everyone should be required to read Brave New World. Huxley provides great insight into the effects of science dominating the human race. He shows that life in the Utopia is more efficient in many respects, however it lacks the deep human emotions that give meaning to life other than "constant consumption." Although first published in 1932, it is amazingly close to reality of life today. Brave New World's vivid descriptions and lively commentaries will hold your attention throughout the entire book. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down!

A Shocking Glance At The Future
This was a great book. Huxley's view of a future "Utopian" state is very shocking, and it says a lot about society and technology. It really makes you think, and I like that. It is also very straightforward and it's hard to miss the point Huxley is making. If you like science fiction this book is a must! Definitely worth your time.

Barron's Regents Exams and Answers : Biology 2000-2001
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (June, 1999)
Authors: Gabrielle I. Edwards, Marion Cimmino, and Frank J. Foder
Average review score:

Excellent practice for NYS Regents
This book is a valuable resource for help in studying for the NYS Bio regents. It gives very good explanations of answers and allows you to analyze your weak spots. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that the actual review material is skimpy and not well defined, but they do have a separate "Let's Review" book that better aids with that.

Time to hit the books!
Many Regents I have thought that there might be no help for me and then someone told me that about these books. They really have saved my life, because they give so many past regents questions that you can get really familiar with what is going to be on the test. It is really a must for anyone who will be talking the regents and it is all you need to study from.

A Great Book for NYS High School Students
If your worried about the biology regents, or even if your not this book is a great and comprehensive reveiw of biology for the Regents exams. It included many practice tests that allow you to check your answers. It also includes many practice questions to help students fully prepare for the regents exam.

Barron's Regents Exams and Answers: Math A
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 2000)
Author: Lawrence S. Leff
Average review score:

Great review source, close to perfection!
I felt this study guide was a great addition to my library of books. It not only helped my nephew study for his Math A test, it helped him with his studies during class. This is an excellent review guide that falls just short of perfection. Some of the explanations were not thorough and tough to understand. This is the only flaw. And mind you this is only on a FEW of the explanations, not all. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who is planning on taking the Math A exam or if you just need help understanding whats going on in class!

Great for practicing for the regents
This book was a really great addition to my studying for the Math A regents. The book is just past regents, so it's the same exact type of questions you would get on the actual regents. It also helps to explain the answers. The only thing I would say negatively is that we received green books for two dollars in class that had all the regents in them, but not the answers or the answers explained. So if you're going to get the green books in class and your class is going over the answers, it may not be worth it. I still found it helpful to go over things on my own, and I would definitely recommend getting this book. I passed the Math A regents in January 2003 with a 90.

math test prep
Just make sure that you get the right (latest ) addition. This one (april 2001) is NOT the latest.

Barron's Regents Power Pack : Sequential Mathematics Course II/Barron's Regents Exams and Answers : Three Year Sequence for High School
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 1996)
Author: Lawrence S. Leff
Average review score:

good book
The review is great, though the book seems to go in-depth in unecessary areas that would never be part of the NYS Regents exam. The graphics and graphs are very easy to understand, and the book is strongly recommended to anyone taking Physics. This book does NOT, however, provide enough info for the more advanced AP Physics exam and SAT II: Physics.

MyBargainShopping.com

National Board Certified Physics Teacher Loves It
This pack is an outstanding resource for students enrolled in college preparatory physics courses, or AP Physics B courses. The explanations are concise and clear. A student reading these books and completing the tests will understand the core concepts, be able to solve basic problems, and attack classroom physics tests with confidence.

As a teacher, I have found the series an invaluable resource for developing test items, and refining my lecture notes. I look to this series of books as a primary curricular standard for my college preparatory physics course.

Excellent class supplement and clear!
I have possibly the most confusing teacher for Sequential Math II, and I take 20 pages of notes per class, none of which do I have a clue what they mean. I'm lucky I bought the power pack. The red book has been prepping me for the Regents exam, and actually have problems my teacher uses to test my class on! :-). The blue book is the best because in less space, and more clearly, it goes over all major topics and gives sample questions. I write this on the day I took a Seq II exam in class, and was the first time I didn't bring my blue book home to study and do not expect a good mark. Anyone taking Sequential II Regents in New York or any other potential test takers should grab this pack if they want to perform higher than with other ordinary prep books or school textbooks!

Buddhahood Without Meditation: A Visionary Account Known As Refining Apparent Phenomen
Published in Paperback by Padma Pub (June, 2002)
Authors: Bdud-Joms-Glin-Pa, Richard Barron, and Dudjom Lingpa
Average review score:

could be better
Let me preface this by stating that of course this is an important book, and a translator's job is never easy.

That said, this book benefits from having the original Tibetan available, but suffers from a overly wordy phenomenologically influenced style of translation. Frankly, I have to read the Tibetan to understand what the translator is trying to convey in English

In general, a problem endemic with translations of Dzogchen texts is that the translators often unncessarily make what is relatively straight forward language in Tibetan a conceptual mess in English in their attempt to convey the meaning of Dzogchen into English.

a holy relic
This is a text usually reserved for those with years of personal guidance under a master, who would then explain the basically esoteric statements and explanations. However, those who do have some experience in Tantric Buddhism, especially Dzogchen, will likely benefit from studying this. As Chagdud Tulku explains at the start of the book, this text should be regarded as a holy object of veneration, and even to keep this on one's altar until transmission is received will bring blessings. The text is a compilation of visionary experiences had by Dudjom Lingpa, a famous lama-yogi of the 19th century. His next reincarnation, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (Dudjom Rinpoche) edited them into the present format, and created a helpful outline of topics, appended to the translation.

Extraordinary openess of secret visions
Keep your mind in the sky, feet on the ground! Remain in the primordial state, even when you walk around!

Turkish Angora Cats: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Behavior, Grooming, and Showing (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1998)
Author: Karen Leigh Davis
Average review score:

A must for Turk owners...
Given that it's the only book out there that details the Turkish Angora, it's worth picking up. However, I like its honesty in the demeanor of the animals, and it gives good tips for anyone who is merely an owner all the way up to an exhibitor. Great photos, too!

Accurate, informative portrayal of a beautiful cat
It is a real joy to find this excellent book about this rarebreed of cat. It is a must for those that are owned by - orcontemplate the beauty of - the Turkish Angora.

The authoritative book on Turkish Angoras cats.
"Turkish Angora Cats : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training" (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) by Karen Leigh Davis, is the most accurate and informative book I have seen on my breed. The Turkish Angora cat suffers from much published misinformation, and I opened the pages of my book with intrepidation, only to find that it is wonderfully written and illustrated, and that it is truely an authoritative work on the subject. The book is thorough, and very entertaining and enjoyable to read. Congratulations to the author, the editor, and the publisher, on a job well done!

Barron's Guide to Distance Learning: Degrees, Certificates, Courses (Barrons Guide to Distance Learning, 1999)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1999)
Author: Pat Criscito
Average review score:

A Beginner's Look at Distance Education
This book ia a good tool for those interested in learning about distance learning. It included information a what to look for in a school, associations that accredit schools, financial aid information and a dictorary of schools and programs. It is a great resource and information source for those new to distance education and those who are wanting information on schools and programs. Some of the information was not as up to date as it should be. I have been involved with distance education since last year and found that many of the schools I am familiar with were not up-dated in the book.

A Fantasic Source For Our Company
As the President for TheDistanceLearningExpo.com, we have used many different resources to guide the people coming to our website. We found Barron's guide to be the most up to date.

This Guide to Distance Learning is a key to the Future
This book is an excellent resource for someone who is looking to go to school but does not have the time or ability to attend a regular school. It gives you all the information you need about the schools to decide if they have the right program and criteria for you. It also gives you the information to contact the schools for more information. It is easy to use and has excellent index's that help you find what you want without having to read the entire book.

Barron's Travelwise Croatian
Published in Audio Cassette by Barrons Educational Audio (April, 1998)
Authors: Dunsan Vitas, Kathleen Luft, Barron's Publishing, Barrons Educational Series, and Dusan Vitas
Average review score:

Book yes, cassettes questionable
There aren't many books available for those seeking to learn Croatian. I was certainly happy with the book. I also got the cassette, and I found it to be useless. It doesn't follow the book at all. In fact, it is a completely separate conversation, following a separate booklet included in the package. Cassettes are usually useful, especially when they follow the lesson plans in the text. Not in this case!

a good phrasebook with a great grammar section
This book is mostly designed as a standard travel phrasebook, with useful info for dealing with hotels, restaurants, travel, making conversation, and so on.

But amazingly enough it also has a great 20-30 grammar section at the back which is the best explanation for some of the things that have stumped me on Croatian grammar in other textbooks designed to teach the language... a great quick reference for stuff like when you use the different cases of nouns, which case goes with which preposition, what all the prepositions mean, how to construct past, present & future tense of verbs, how to conjugate many common verbs; and so on.

This book is great!

Phrase book is solid, but the cassette is superfluous
BARRON'S TRAVELWISE CROATIAN is an very helpful phrasebook with a clear layout, comprehensive list of phrases, and a concise overview of Croatian grammar and pronunciation that is nonetheless compact and lightweight. I brought it along on a trip to Zagreb this past summer and was very happy with it.

However, I would recommend buying the book alone, and not the book-and-cassette combination. Croatian pronunciation is much like Spanish or Italian, and the orthography is so simple that anyone should be able to read out loud words they've never encountered before. Cassettes for this language aren't necessary and only add to the cost, and they also add unnecessary bulk to one's suitcase.

This was my first purchase in Barron's Travelwise series of phrase books and I was quite impressed. I'd recommend this phrasebook above all others for anyone going to Croatia.

Bloodhounds: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 1998)
Authors: Kim Campbell Thornton, Michele Earle-Bridges, and Michelle Earle-Bridges
Average review score:

Informative Book
Very informative. Not only does it give you a little history on the breed, but details the positives and what could be negatives of the breed. A book I would recommend to anyone considering this breed.

..

A must have for any soon to be Bloodhound owner!
This book has everything you need to know about the Bloodhound breed. It shows pictures of how to take care of your Bloodhound ect.... I bought this book to learn more about the breed and to train my Bloodhound to track game, and it has worked perfectly for my needs. The only thing they don't really mention in this book is how serious the ear problem is for Bloodhounds. My Bloodhound for example needs her ears cleaned about every 3 days. If you don't clean their ears that often they will get a really bad ear infection and the only way to get it out is surgery, around $500.00 worth. They are a very high maintenance animal but are well worth the effort.

A thorough introduction with terrific illustrations
This is my favorite of several books I have read on this breed. I am a soon-to-be bloodhound owner, and this book combined good advise with beautiful pictures. Also, unlike some other books this book stays strictly about the topic with no generic filler.
